The Swedes are late as usual: On stress placement in parallel words in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish

چکیده

After a short general discussion of ’parallel’ words, we compare the placement of main stress in such words, in Swedish (Stockholm), Danish (Copenhagen) and Norwegian (Ålesund). To be sure, this property coincides in the vast majority (> 95%) of the cases. However, concentrating on the exceptions (about 300 per language pair in our data), we find that although all three languages exhibit late stress in many words of non-Germanic origin, this tendency is stronger in Swedish than in both Danish and Norwegian, with no significant difference between the latter two.

Explaining Danish-Swedish asymmetric word intelligibility - An error analysis

Previous research has shown that the Danish-Swedish mutual intelligibility is asymmetric at the text level. Danes perform better in tests developed to investigate intelligibility of Swedish at the global level of whole texts than Swedes participating in Danish tests. This asymmetry has usually been attributed to non-linguistic factors such as a more positive attitude towards Swedes and more exp...

Feedback in Nordic First-Encounters: a Comparative Study

The paper compares how feedback is expressed via speech and head movements in comparable corpora of first encounters in three Nordic languages: Danish, Finnish and Swedish. The three corpora have been collected following common guidelines, and they have been annotated according to the same scheme in the NOMCO project. The results of the comparison show that in this data the most frequent feedba...

Is spoken Danish less intelligible than Swedish?

The most straightforward way to explain why Danes understand spoken Swedish relatively better than Swedes understand spoken Danish would be that spoken Danish is intrinsically a more difficult language to understand than spoken Swedish. We discuss circumstantial evidence suggesting that Danish is intrinsically poorly intelligible. We then report on a formal experiment in which we tested the int...
